Wernigerode day 6

It's pronounced 'vairn-igga-roada' and is a beautiful little tourist village full of quaint half-timbered houses. There's nothing quaint about our hotel which is slap-bang modern 4 stars - except no free wi-fi, a sad deficiency. After a sumptuous breakfast (20 different teas; I had Granny's Garden) we met our local guide for a historical tour of the village. I lasted 5 minutes then disappeared to look at the market and shops. I only bought some cherries but because David stayed with the tour he found the wool shop and took me there later.

We took the carriage ride to the castle, clip-clopping up through the streets until our 2 horses are straining hard and we had to walk the last very steep bit. The castle looks fairytale from a distance but up close it's grim and forbidding and I didn't like it at all, couldn't wait to get back to the busy bustling village.
