David and I had the front seats, a privilege on a sight seeing day. Fab is an excellent driver and you never feel agitated with him at the wheel. We drove across the city to Berlin Botanic Gardens where we had lunch in the restaurant (roast chicken and cherry crepes) then divided into smaller groups with a local guide. David wanted to have a good look at the arboretum so he ticked off on his own. Ann and I chose to look at the gardens of different countries but by the time we got to Greece which was hot dry and hilly we'd had enough but we had to keep going. (Ann and Bill were delayed for 5 hours in Dusseldorf while a replacement plane came from Vienna. ) Japan was the best (photo 1) This is a huge Botanic Garden of 126 acres with only 80 gardeners and a policy of calling all the weedy bits a meadow. I've never seen so many weeds, a lot of them escaped plants: what is a plant in Japan is a weed in Australia.
The hot houses are very well-maintained so perhaps that's where the money goes.
Next stop was the lookout on top of the television tower, another must-see for tourists. We went up 203 metres to the observation platform from which you can look out over Berlin through 360 degrees. It was great to have enough knowledge to pick out our hotel (photo 4)
