Hanover day 7

Packed up and on the road at 9 we are heading to Lubeck where we embark for Denmark. En route we stop in Hanover to visit Electress Sophie's garden. She was the mother of George I and would have been Queen of England herself except she dropped dead in her garden at the age of 83 just weeks before she would have gained the throne.

She leaves a legacy of a beautiful formal garden with a fountain which throws water 60 metres into the air for an hour a day three times a week. Our visit is timed to coincide with this and in spite of thin drizzly rain we love this garden. We have an hour for it and the Herrenhausen garden across the road which features the new German style of naturalistic gardening - colour and texture in the form of waving grasses. Must say it is very attractive and should be good where water is scarce. The orchids are stunning and that's from someone who doesn't usually like orchids. I also enjoyed watching gardeners weeding a pond. /photo 4

We arrived at our restaurant for lunch only to find we weren't expected! No fault of Merryle who had prepaid and checked this morning - but the manager hadn't told the staff, who were understandably miffed. However they rallied around well and we had a lovely meal of veal .
